Can you expand on this a little? I think I understand the desire to have items that don't show up with the other 'All Items' but do you just envision this as another static group (kind of like 'All Items')? Also, would these items have all of the same details as other items? Thanks.

Douglas, I didn't have any greater detail in mind. It would just be exactly what you describe - an independent group with the same data fields as are already available.

It would simply be somewhere to store details of models which you hoped to buy in the future - an easy way to check e.g. the catalogue number of a particular model you were hunting. The models in this group wouldn't show up in any others, or in the analysis part of the program. Hope that makes sense!

If you had ideas for anything more complex then please share - I can't imagine anything else I would particularly require.

I think we're on the same page here - thanks for clarifying. :D The less complex, the better!

I just uploaded a new version that incorporates a framework to handle application updates. Updates to this version will be much simpler and are as easy as clicking a button.

Now, the bad news (this is a work in progress, after all). For those who have already downloaded the application there is some work to get updated to this version (future updates will be painless). Please read these instructions if you have already downloaded the application prior to reading this message. Thanks!

Douglas, just updated my copy. Your instructions are generally very clear, but Vista users should note that there is no longer a "Documents and Settings" folder. They will need to access the 'Users' folder from the C: directory. I also had to make hidden folders visible before I found the correct files. After that, it was plain sailing.

Dave - sorry about that. I'm working on an XP system but may have to start testing on my wife's laptop as well! I will update the instructions with your corrections. Thanks!

Good Morning Douglas,
I have been holding off downloading this program as I suffer from Vista but another question looms for me.
Do you know if it'll have anything to be wary of as I am upgrading to Windows 7, hopefully this weekend?
(Mother's away and there'll be less grief about the cussing and spitting... ;) )

No need to apologise Douglas. It didn't take a whole lot of figuring out - just thought it would make life easier for others if I shared my new-found knowledge!

Scott - I don't have access to a Windows 7 system so I can't say what the experience is. However, the Adobe AIR works with Windows 2000 through Windows 7 so there should be no issues at all. The main reason I went with AIR is so that all I have to do is write the app and let Adobe handle the different OSes.

If I were you I would wait to install the program until after the Windows 7 upgrade.

I really get quite confused doing computer program stuff. :? I downloaded the "old" version a few days ago. Instead of going thru the whole thing, is it OK if I just delete the old program and download the newest? I have no information uploaded to the software yet, so nothing would get lost... :?

I'm using a Mac.

If you did not enter any data into the program then there is nothing you will lose so just go ahead and download the newest. I coded the program on both Windows & OS X but use it all the time on my iMac so it will work fine for you.

Lee,
I can understand how a gentleman of your sterling mettle might be able to resist using foul
language...I fear I fall short. In these parts, we turn our heads and spit at the mention of Mr Gates
and his infernal software. (hence the primary reason for sodden carpetting)... ;)

I've temporarily removed 0.2.2 and rolled back to 0.2.1 on the download page until I get Dave's issue sorted out.

Douglas, my version automatically updated itself, but when the program restarted following the update, I got this message.

"Fatal error: database.getDetailIDsByCriteria: SQLError executing query
The application will close."

This now comes up every time I try to open the program, and it simply closes itself again :?

Oh no. First of all, don't worry as the data should be fine. Do you mind sending some of the files to me to check out? If that's OK the dcdb.db, groups.xml and error.log files would help me sort out the issue. I guess no matter how much you test someone will find a bug. :(

I'm happy to be a guinea pig - the idea of the program is such a good one, it's worth working through a few teething problems.

Where would I find those files? Could you also PM your email address so that I can send them over Douglas. Thanks!

Thanks Douglas. All seems fine again - running 0.2.3 without any problems. Wishlist feature works perfectly, including transferring models into the collection as they are purchased :)

Re: Diecast Database Program

I just posted version 0.2.3 a few hours ago. If you already have v0.2.1 you can update to v0.2.3 through the About Box (Tools -> About menu item) in the program. Otherwise, v0.2.3 is available from the Diecast Database Program main page. Be sure to download the updated user manual for information on the new features.

Version 0.2.3 includes the following changes:

New/enhanced features
  • Better performance with large (1,000 items or more) groups
  • NEW: Wish List
  • NEW: Data export
  • Data import enhancements:

    • Support for more date formats:
      • MM/DD/YYYY
      • DD/MM/YYYY
      • DD.MM.YYYY
      • DD,MM,YYYY
      • YYYY-MM-DD
      • MM/YYYY (dates will default to the first of the month)
    • Support for more currency formats:
      • 1234.56
      • 1,234.56
      • 1.234,56
      • 1 234,56
    • Better handling of embedded double-quote (") and comma (,) characters in import files
    • Allow blank dates and years in import

Bug fixes
  • Fixed database migration issue when migrating from v0.2.1 to v0.2.2
  • Fixed crash when editing an item in a filtered list and saving changes that would remove it from the filtered list.
  • Fixed crash when performing expense analysis on regular groups.
  • Fixed bug where values greater than $999.99 would be changed to $1.00.
  • Fixed bug in date field breakdowns for regular and smart groups.
  • Fixed bugs when adding an item to an empty group (deleting, selecting, drag and drop, etc.).
  • Fixed bug where new item would not always scroll into view if the new item was the first item in the list.
  • Removed tool tip text from Import button when it is disabled because an import is in progress.
  • Average line always displays even when expense is $0 for the time period.
