Vitesse Miscues

Postby Matt » Fri Dec 21, 2012 10:45 am

Just noticed on my Macau Outlander, that the headligths are different left to right. The left headlight is a chrome housing, while the right is a black one. I'm at work so I can't snag a picture but I'll get one later on!

All,

I recently purchased a Volkswagen 1200 (Vitesse 35800), a two-toned oval window model. As I understand it, the oval window was a feature on Volkswagens between 1953 and 1957. Volkswagen added the Wolfsburg crest to its Beetles in 1951, and it appeared on all Beetles until 1959. Volkswagen added front window vents to its Beetles in 1952. This model has neither feature. Am I correct in assuming these omissions are inaccuracies in the model? I would appreciate any input anyone can give.

Those are detail issues- compare the basic shape to the real thing and you'll see where they went wrong. The model almost looks like they used the artist's impression from '40s advertising as a template.

Tom,

Thanks for your response. I thought the shape was a little different, but I'm not yet attuned to that kind of analysis. But do you agree that the details I mentioned are wrong? For example, were there any oval windows produced without side window vents?

Having been a plastic kit builder in the dim and distant past and having seen this phenomenon occur on chromed bits I would suggest the 'black' headlight is a manufacturing fault where the 'chrome' hasn't been attracted to the base black plastic. If it's from a shop you could perhaps send it back as 'faulty'.

You might well be correct, I'd have to check my literature to verify though. Personally, the details don't quite bother me that much when they can't get the basic shape right.

The original Beetle is apparently a tough shape to model correctly, I have several models and most are somehow wrong- some very badly.
