first post - trying to figure something out re: Spark C291

i've seen two pictures online in two very different places where the rear of this model looks like this:

Image

where are the red tail lights?

shouldn't it look like this??

Image

is it possible some sort of masking is on them from the factory in the "all yellow" pics?

Those are two different models. Look at the names above the door. The tailights on the first model are just below the exhaust.

Welcome Builthatch. Nice to have you on board.

With respect to you question, I don't have this car so I can only guess the answer. From a little digging around it seems there are two different versions of the C291 and your photos are comparing the two. The top picture is KBS068 (ie a Special Japanese only release) of the #2 C291 driven by Schumacher/Wendlinger at Autopolis in October 1991. Note the blacked out vents over the front wheels and the small winglet on the nose.

The second model shown is the regular Spark release S1250 of the #2 C291 driven by Schumacher/Kreutzpointner at Le Mans in June 1991. Note Schumacher never drove the car, just Kreutzpointner, before it was withdrawn.

You can see the differences better in the front on shots :

S1250 :

That doesn't directly answer your question why there are no rear lights on the Autopolis version, but Spark are pretty good with their research. I looked for pictures of the actual Autopolis car, and while I couldn't find any of the #2 car, I did find this shot of the sister #1 car which shows Spark were correct. I guess the lights were only fitted for the night time racing at Le Mans and weren't required for daytime races :

No problem - feel free to ask any other questions. That's what we're here for.

Over time, you'll probably build up a collection of favourie links. One of the best for 1:1 reference material is the Racingsportscars website www.racingsportscars.com/photo.html

The nice thing with this site is its interecative, so you where you find something that interests you, can click on the car, chassis, team name, drivers names etc to see other races where they appeared. Eg, below is a link to all races where the Mercedes C291 appeared (which incidently shows the #1 car I showed above was from the previous race in Mexico) : http://www.racingsportscars.com/type/ph ... /C291.html

In the end though, a quick search on Google Images will tell you a lot both about the 1:1and the 1:43 versions.

i wanted to mention in this thread that i ended up getting the Japan-only release of the C291 and it had a defective silver portion on the top. i received it bubbled up and cracked.

Image

so, i sent it back and they sent me another. sure enough, that one did it too. so, i figured i would investigate to see exactly what it was, the material - it's simply a decal. it popped right off.

Image

now the model isn't accurate but it looks a lot better without the bubbled up and cracked silver piece on top!

i am slightly concerned about the integrity of the rest of the decals but we'll see. if it happened on two straight models in the same exact area, i'm sure it's just that particular decal that has issues.

i may try doing something with Bare Metal Foil or something of that ilk in an attempt to bring it back to spec. but for now, it looks clean!

Your corrected model looks far better than the factory version; I for one wouldn't rework it with BMF.
My request to model manufacturers: omit details you can't model properly.
