MAN porsche renntransporter by schuco (now with pictures)

Post by danny » Wed Sep 30, 2015 6:48 pm

I just came back from Germany where i picked up my MAN renntransporter. I will make pictures as soon as possible.
If someone of you ordered one as well, check it out before you buy it. We checked out 6 of them and only 2 came out reasonable/good. The others had a left front tyre which scraped the fender. One had a skew cabin, and all of them had a gap between the upper and lower deck due to a bend chassis. I picked out the best one. The shop owner sends the rest back too schuco

I saw this yesterday for the first time. They were asking Euro 285 which was a bit much for my liking at the moment, so I didn't check it out that closely.

However, my initial impression is the colour was very dark - maybe a darker red than it should be.

Also they've packed it a display case the size of a shoebox. It's unnecessarily large, meaning anyone who buys one overseas and is getting it shipped will pay a small fortune in postage on top of the initial purchase price.

€285,- is a rip off. they are easy to find for about €180,- at the well known shops. I paid even less because i pre ordered.

Continuing on from Danny's posts above......

In the 1950’s, the Porsche racing department of Zuffenhausen usually relied upon a Mercedes L3500 truck to move its race cars. The cars were stacked one above the other using a simple pipe frame, and covered by a canvas tarpaulin to protect them from the elements during their transport from the factory to various race tracks across Europe. The Mercedes was usually accompanied by an Opel Blitz van that carried spare parts and tools.

In 1960, Porsche recognized the need for a larger transporter. Its cars were getting bigger, and its race teams had typically grown from two to three or four cars. To meet its needs, Porsche designed a new transporter to be the German counterpart to the Fiat Bartoletti’s of Ferrari and Maserati. The transporter was constructed on a basic chassis from MAN, who had recently launched their 415 and 635 models. Although visually identical, the 415 was the smaller model with a 5.2 litre six-cylinder diesel engine producing 100 hp and 4.5-ton payload, while the 635 was equipped with a 7-litre six-cylinder diesel engine with 135 hp and a 5 ton capacity.

It is not clear who designed the new transporter, but it is likely it was designed in-house at Zuffenhausen. The standard M.A.N. cab was extended to provide space for an additional seat, the front part of the rear deck was replaced by a large metal storage box for parts and an elevate deck provided space for two additional cars.

With the M.A.N. transporter Porsche took its cars all over Europe, from the Targa Florio in Sicily to Le Mans in Western France. It was used for almost a decade, during which it carried 1960 – 63 Porsche 718’s, the 1964 – 65 Porsche 904’s, the 1966 - 67 Carrera 6’s and the later 908’s and 910’s.

Even though Porsche took delivery of two Mercedes O3500 "box vans" in 1967, the M.A.N. transporter continued to be used regularly. In 1970, it was rebuilt in order to accommodate the wider and longer 917’s. In this format it was loaned to Porsche Salzburg to use.

British roads have history. Some were built by the Romans. British road investment being what it is, they have only been re-surfaced a few times since.

That's an excellent transporter Ian and the load makes it so much more interesting. I'll start looking for one too, it looks almost as good as Exoto.

I'm glad you had the opportunity to select from several examples of the truck prior to your purchase. Based on the type of issues you described, it would be my luck to order from over here and receive the worst example! I don't know enough about the 1:1 truck to know it's flaws, I just know I really...REALLY like what I see here!!! Nice addition to be sure!

After just 10 days of displaying the models with the transporter, I found the tyres on the Porsches were starting to react with the paint on the deck of the transporter. I've cut some strips of black paper which I've laid on the transporter deck to prevent further problems.
